The Reading Wheels Association is now a registered charity but started life at the end of 2002 as a campaign for safer skating in Reading named Safe Skate Reading. The many small groups of young people and adults met at a meeting of the Sports Development Forum where a large number of skaters and other wheeled sports people turned up to discuss the issue in Reading. From this meeting it was agreed that the Council would engage the views of local skateboarders, in-line skaters and BMX riders if any future Skate Park scheme that were proposed. This clearly identified the need for suitable facilities in Reading. It was to this end a fully constituted group was formed in March 2003 and The Reading Wheels Association was born. In the first year, RWA membership raced to just over 260 members, 75% of which were aged between 9 and 16 years, which proved further evidence that there was real need for a facility. Each member paid £5.00 per year to go towards the work we do in trying to make this dream a reality. In August 2003, the Eastpak Transition Tour came to Reading with our help. This raised awareness of our campaign and was covered by Meridian TV, the local radio stations and newspapers. It was a huge success that boosted interest in our project. All of the local press and radio stations now take all our events and moves seriously and continue to give us good coverage. In 2004, the whole project moved up a gear when the local council made a donation of land (subject to conditions) on a 25 year lease at a minimum rent with the benefit of rate relief on the premises. The council also helped us secure a pledged donation of £200,000 from a local family. Under the guidance of the local council and the conditions of the pledged donation, The Reading Wheels Association made an application at the end of 2004 to become a registered charity which was granted in January 2005
